Apartheid education superior
The quality of education (or lack of it) has been the central theme of an ongoing debate in the media in recent months. This of course in the context of the new curriculum, the 2008 senior certificate exams and steadily declining pass rates.
Earlier in the year academic Mamphela Ramphele and businesswoman Wendy Luhabe caused a sharp intake of breath in some circles when both suggested at a public meeting that “Bantu education” under apartheid had served them better than today’s kids are being served in post 1994 township schools.
A common refrain too among many older white South Africans who benefited from an almost-free Christian National Education provided by the apartheid government is that it was somehow “superior”.
In fact back then people would compare “Bantu education” and the education received by their white counterparts as a half loaf verses a whole loaf.
