What happened to this wine? Has popularity resulted in massive quantities of lackluster bottlings with insipid flavor profiles and noticeable flaws?
I purchased almost $100 worth of pinot grigio to write this week's column and none of wines I tried were worthy of a review.
The first tasted more like a malted beverage than something made from grapes. The second had an extraordinarily bitter finish (like you sometimes get from the thick skin of a red delicious apple). The third bottle was a vacuous product that tasted more like water than wine. The fourth (a non-Italian version) didn't even taste like pinot grigio. And the fifth was lean and mean and tasted like sulfur.. First, my retailer (who I know and trust) really grappled with the five selections she recommended. In fact, she called another wine consultant over to discuss the numerous facings of pinot grigios on the shelf to narrow my take-home to the final five. Prices ranged from $9.99 to $19.99, with most of the wine purchased falling in the $13-15 range.
Normally, the wine staff thrills to the challenge of giving winning wine recommendations. This go-round their comments were more like, "Well,. We supply skechers shape ups,Reebok easytone,perfect body shape.Save 40% off,free shipping to worldwide this one isn't bad."
The second issue is that (obviously) the wine shop stocks so many pinot grigios because there is consumer demand. But why is there such demand when the wines are so disappointing? They were literally not good enough to drink, like that sub-standard dessert that isn't worth the calories.
What are we doing to ourselves? Is it fad or habit that keeps us returning to a category that under-delivers?
There are many better and cheaper bottlings out there that will actually deliver flavor and refreshment. They may not be as easy to pronounce, but they are certainly worth searching out..
