Lulu Guinness, handbag designer
Lulu Guinness, 49, started designing handbags in the basement of her London house 20 years ago. The Lulu Guinness brand now encompasses jewellery, scarves, umbrellas, perfume and bedlinen. She recently launched the Lulu Guinness Scholarship at Cordwainers at London College of Fashion. She lives in Notting Hill with her daughters, Tara, 17, and Madeleine, 12, and her dog, Woffle.
Morning routine In the first hour and a half of my day I have three cups of coffee and a bath. During term time I wake up at seven and in the school holidays I wake up at eight. I'm a much nicer person in the holidays because I get that extra hour'sleep. I could easily not have breakfast but I make myself because I know it improves my mood. At the moment I'm having Marmite on toast.
Getting dressed Nine out of 10 times I wear a dress.. Childhood ambition I always wanted to be an actress, mainly because I wanted to be glamorous. Aside from a few plays for charity and a drama audition in Cape Town, when my parents moved out there, I didn't get very far. I ended up at art school in Cape Town. Back in London I started designing my own bags in my basement. My business just grew from there but it didn't happen overnight.
On the wall I'm more into craft than paintings. I love my John Derian rectangular plates (pictured). He is a friend of mine who invented an amazing technique of printing on glass. The pictures on these charming plates are from old books.
